Genetics & Origin of AK-47
AK-47 is a classic from the Serious Seeds catalogue and, according to the strain description, is one of the most award-winning cannabis strains: the breeder cites more than 22 awards worldwide, including prizes at the High Times Cannabis Cup and at the LIFT Expo. According to the breeder, a lab test at the 1999 Cannabis Cup showed the highest THC content of the competition; it does not state a percentage in the strain description, nor a CBD value. The genetics unite Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan lines into a Sativa-dominant hybrid. According to the strain description, the strain bears its name not because of aggressiveness but because of its uncompromising effect. The seeds are photoperiod and regular, so they produce male and female plants. In the shop, AK-47 by Serious Seeds is also available as a second item without the addition “Regular”; Serious 6 Regular is likewise regular.
Who Is AK-47 For?
AK-47 combines high potency with a short flowering time. It suits:
- Newcomers to working with regular seeds, as growing it is considered easy according to the breeder
- Selectors and hobby breeders looking for a proven line as starting material
- Indoor growers who would like to harvest after 53 to 63 days of flowering
- Collectors of award-winning genetics
- Experienced consumers who appreciate a strong, clear effect
It is less suitable for anyone who has to grow inconspicuously or has little tolerance: the smell is extremely intense and the THC content very high. You can find more strains to start with under regular seeds for beginners.
Growing AK-47: Indoor & Outdoor
Indoor Growing
In the grow room, AK-47 flowers for 53 to 63 days – astonishingly short for a strain with a predominantly Sativa share, as the breeder emphasises. The plants stay medium-sized and quickly form dense, resinous flowers with little leaf; Serious Seeds calls them low-maintenance and efficient. The breeder rates the yield as high without putting a figure on it in g/m². The breeder recommends odour control, as the scent is extremely intense. With regular seeds, it is best to germinate more seeds than planned and remove male plants in pre-flowering, unless you want to breed. The basics on this are in the Growpedia.
Outdoor Growing
Outdoors, AK-47 is ready for harvest in early to mid-October and, according to Serious Seeds, thrives in mild to warm climate zones. The breeder does not state a yield per plant or a height for open ground. It expressly points out that the strong smell becomes an issue outdoors too – choose the location accordingly. A sunny, airy spot helps to keep the compact flowers dry until harvest in October. Only grow where it is legal to do so.
Effect, Aroma & Flavour of AK-47
Serious Seeds describes the scent as extremely intense and penetrating, and the flavour as spicy, earthy and slightly sweet with a note typical of Sativas. The smoke is considered strong but smooth. The breeder does not state a lab terpene profile. According to the breeder, the effect is strong, long-lasting, clear and pleasant; the strain description speaks of a “one-hit wonder” and reports that the strain caused a stir in the Amsterdam coffeeshops shortly after its release. The breeder gives the THC content only as very high and refers to the top value in the lab test of the 1999 Cannabis Cup. So start cautiously – how intense the effect is depends on dose and personal tolerance. With regular seeds, differences between individual plants are also possible.
