Genetics & Origin of Desfrán
According to Dutch Passion, Desfrán is a legendary strain in South America. It is the result of a cross of Destroyer with Destroyer; originally it was a three-way cross of Mexican Oaxaca, Colombian Punto Rojo and Meao. It came to Dutch Passion through Alberto from Argentina, whom the breeder introduces as a master grower, cannabis connoisseur and owner of “Haze Magazine” – its introduction in Europe was the first joint project. The strain is 100% Sativa. The breeder's cup list comprises nine placings from 2009 to 2014, including first places Outdoor at the Copa del Plata 2009 and the Masters Córdoba 2011. The seeds are feminised and photoperiod. As an autoflowering variant, Dutch Passion offers Auto Desfran; in addition, Dr. Underground names a Destroyer as the mother plant of Crystal M.E.T.H.
Who Is Desfrán For?
Desfrán is a pure Sativa with a corresponding need for space. It suits:
- Sativa lovers looking for genetics that have won multiple awards
- Indoor growers with tall rooms who work with SOG or SCROG
- Gardeners who grow in soil with plenty of root space
- Aroma fans who find pear, green apple and caramel appealing
- Consumers who would like to choose between a cerebral and a heavier effect via the harvest time
It is less suitable for low tents, as it can triple its height in flowering, and for anyone who needs concrete THC and yield figures as a basis for planning. You can find more pure Sativas under 100% Sativa.
Growing Desfrán: Indoor & Outdoor
Indoor Growing
During vegetative growth, according to Dutch Passion, Desfrán needs only few nutrients. It grows well in soil, especially with plenty of room for the roots, but also makes vigorous progress with other methods. As a 100% Sativa it can become very large and forms long branches that dominate the grow room in no time; in flowering it stretches and can triple its height. So switch to 12/12 early. The breeder calls the very resinous strain suitable for SOG and SCROG and gives normally 9 to 10 weeks of flowering. It does not give figures for yield and final height. You will find the basics on growing and training in the Growpedia.
Outdoor Growing
Dutch Passion gives no details on growing outdoors in the strain description – neither harvest time nor height or yield per plant – and the strain is listed as an indoor strain. That it works outside in principle is suggested by the outdoor awards in the cup list, such as first place Outdoor at the Copa del Plata 2009. For Central European summers, however, nothing can be derived from this: a pure Sativa with this stretch is likely to be better off in a greenhouse or in the grow room. Only grow where it is legal to do so.
Effect, Aroma & Flavour of Desfrán
Even during growth, according to Dutch Passion, the stem gives off intense fruity aromas when you rub it. The finished flowers smell of pears and green apples; the flavour is reminiscent of pear caramels with a hint of grapes and melons. The breeder does not give a lab terpene profile. Once dried, the dense flowers look like glazed pine cones, according to the manufacturer. According to Dutch Passion, the effect depends on the harvest time: early harvests can lead to a very cerebral, psychedelic high; harvested late, Desfrán tastes somewhat sweeter and becomes the “true destroyer”. The breeder does not give a THC value; two cup awards in the “Most Potency” category point to high potency. How intense the effect is depends on dose and personal tolerance.
