Genetics & Origin of OG Kush
Silent Seeds calls OG Kush a true Californian benchmark: for almost a decade, it says, the strain has been a hit in most dispensaries and with many US artists. The breeder's version comes from Lemon Thai × ChemDawg and, with 75% Indica and 25% Sativa, is clearly Indica-dominant. The data sheet states 22 to 26% THC, while elsewhere the manufacturer speaks of 24 to 26%; it gives the CBD content as low. According to Silent Seeds, the strain owes its standing to its aromatic profile. The manufacturer lists it as a two-time award-winning strain and names two prizes: “Flavor of the Year” from Soft Secret Magazine (Spain 2014) and a third place in the indoor category of the V Cannamex Cup (Spain 2015). The seeds are feminised and photoperiod. An OG Kush from a different breeding line is OG Kush by Humboldt Seed Company.
Who Is OG Kush For?
OG Kush by Silent Seeds is a strong strain with plenty of yield and plenty of smell. It suits:
- Kush lovers looking for the aroma of petrol and lemon
- Indoor growers who would like to harvest after 55 days of flowering
- Yield-focused gardeners – the manufacturer states 550 g/m²
- Outdoor growers with space for plants 3 m tall
- Consumers with a high tolerance who appreciate very potent flowers
If you have little space outdoors or are looking for a mild strain, this strain is not such a good fit. You can find more strong strains under Super High THC Content.
Growing OG Kush: Indoor & Outdoor
Indoor Growing
Indoors, Silent Seeds gives the flowering time as 55 days, counted from the switch to 12/12, and the yield as 550 g/m². The manufacturer does not state a plant height for the grow room. It recommends pruning and training the plants and lists several methods for this: Sea of Green, SCROG, FIM, supercropping and lollipopping. Which of them fits depends on your room and the number of plants. Because of the intense petrol and citrus smell, a powerful carbon filter makes sense. You will find guides to the training techniques in the Growpedia.
Outdoor Growing
Outdoors, according to the manufacturer, OG Kush grows 3 m tall and delivers 1,100 g per plant. According to Silent Seeds, harvest falls in early to mid October. Plants like these need plenty of space, a large root volume and supports for the heavy branches in good time. A sunny, sheltered spot helps to bring the flowers to ripeness dry in autumn. Only grow where it is legal to do so.
Effect, Aroma & Flavour of OG Kush
According to Silent Seeds, the aroma is the reason for the strain's reputation: unique, intense, complex and rich in contrast, like a clever combination of petrol and lemon. On flavour the manufacturer gives two descriptions – the data sheet says sweet and fruity, while elsewhere it describes it as oil, lemon and gas. The manufacturer does not give a lab terpene profile. By its description, the effect sets in quickly, is strong and lasts a long time; it affects body and head equally. With 22 to 26% THC, OG Kush is one of the very potent strains, which is why cautious dosing makes sense. How intense the effect is depends on dose and individual tolerance.
