Genetics & Origin of OG Kush
Many stories surround the origin of OG Kush. Some consider it a mix of ChemDawg, Lemon Thai and Pakistani Kush, others a special ChemDawg cut from the early 1990s; Royal Queen Seeds accordingly lists the genetics as unknown and only suspected. The abbreviation is just as disputed: "Original Gangster" or "Ocean Grown" – according to the strain description, the majority today leans towards the second reading, in keeping with the origin on the US West Coast. The RQS version is an Indica-dominant hybrid with around 19% THC; the strain description gives the CBD content as "medium". The seeds are feminised and photoperiod. For comparison there is OG Kush by White Label Seed Co.; as a parent strain, OG Kush is also found in Bubba Kush by Barney's Farm.
Who Is OG Kush For?
OG Kush is a classic with a character of its own. It suits:
- Fans of the typical diesel-citrus aroma of the West Coast
- Experienced consumers looking for a strong, complex and long-lasting effect
- Indoor growers who can handle stretch in flowering
- Outdoor gardeners with space for plants 180 to 220 cm tall
- Collectors who would like to grow an icon from California
It is less suitable for damp locations without mould prevention and for a very first grow: because the large, dense buds require care against mould in high humidity, we rate it as a strain for experienced growers. You can find more strains with an American background under US Genetics.
Growing OG Kush: Indoor & Outdoor
Indoor Growing
Indoors, OG Kush grows 90 to 160 cm tall and flowers for 7 to 9 weeks. According to the strain description, the yield is 425 to 475 g/m². The strain tends to stretch, i.e. it still gains considerable height after the switch to flowering, but then fills out well in the flowering phase. So allow enough distance to the lamp or keep the shoots flat by tying them down or with a net. The flowers become large, dense and resinous; in the final weeks, low humidity and steady air movement are important. The intense smell calls for a good carbon filter. You can read more about handling stretching strains in the Growpedia.
Outdoor Growing
Outdoors, OG Kush reaches 180 to 220 cm and is harvested in October in the Northern Hemisphere. The strain description states 500 to 550 g per plant. In high humidity, the large, dense buds require some care against mould: an airy, sunny location and regular checks in autumn help. Only grow where it is legal to do so.
Effect, Aroma & Flavour of OG Kush
The scent of OG Kush is intense and diesel-like with a citrus note; the strain description compares it to pungent cleaning products. The flavour is strong, spicy and earthy with a long finish. The strain description speaks of one of the most distinctive terpene profiles of all but names no individual terpenes and no lab values. The effect is described as strongly physical and mental – relaxing but clear – and also as complex and long-lasting. Accordingly, the strain is popular above all with experienced users. The THC content is around 19%, and the CBD content is given as "medium", without a figure. How strongly you feel the effect depends on dose and individual tolerance.
