Genetics & Origin of Oldtimer's Haze
Haze originated in California in the 1960s and 1970s from the crossing of tropical Sativas that were being imported at the time. The Sativa became the foundation of many hybrids of the following decades but, according to Ace Seeds, had almost disappeared from breeding in the 1980s when Skunk and Indica strains emerged. The Oldtimer's Haze population was preserved by Oldtimer, a British breeder, and then reproduced by Ace Seeds with a broad selection of parent plants. The breeder describes it as a pure Haze with 100% Sativa which, as a semi-stabilised hybrid, preserves the genetic diversity that many modern Haze lines have lost – with phenotypes ranging from the almost extinct Purple Haze through Green Haze to intermediate forms. The seeds are regular and produce male and female plants. Another Haze line from Ace Seeds is Panama A5 Haze.
Who Is Oldtimer's Haze For?
Oldtimer's Haze is a piece of strain history and above all needs time. It suits:
- Collectors and preservation breeders who want to preserve a pure Haze population
- Hobby breeders who need male and female plants for crosses
- Hardcore Sativa lovers who plan for 16 to 20 weeks of flowering
- Gardeners in a tropical or subtropical climate up to the 37th parallel
- Consumers looking for a stimulating, mental high
If you are looking for fast harvests or high yields, this strain is not a good choice. You can find more pure Sativas under 100% Sativa.
Growing Oldtimer's Haze: Indoor & Outdoor
Indoor Growing
Ace Seeds gives the indoor flowering time as 16 to 20 weeks and rates the yield as medium to low. Because of the extreme tropical Sativa genetics, the breeder recommends indoor growing for hardcore Sativa lovers, breeding projects or seed production. The plants have very thin, pale green leaves. Their nutrient requirement is low, especially for nitrogen – so feed sparingly. According to Ace Seeds, the strain has very high resistance to grey mould, average to high resistance to powdery mildew and whitefly, and average resistance to spider mites. As this is regular seed, you determine the sex in pre-flowering and remove male plants unless pollination is planned. You will find the basics in the Growpedia.
Outdoor Growing
Outdoors, according to Ace Seeds, Oldtimer's Haze delivers the best results in a tropical or subtropical climate, between the 20th and 37th parallels; warm, coastal regions are recommended. Ripening falls in December to early January. Central Europe lies well north of this zone; in non-tropical latitudes, according to the breeder, a greenhouse helps with ripening. The flexible stems withstand heavy rainfall and storms. Ace Seeds advises organic soil with guano and worm castings, a sunny spot and little fertiliser. Only grow where it is legal to do so.
Effect, Aroma & Flavour of Oldtimer's Haze
Ace Seeds describes an old, old-school Sativa aroma: ripe tropical fruit, spices, incense, wood and black liqueur. The breeder does not name individual terpenes or a lab terpene profile. It describes the effect as stimulating and mental – a boundless high with no ceiling. The manufacturer highlights the aroma and the high effect as outstanding and unique. Ace Seeds gives the THC content as 8 to 12% and the CBD content as below 1%; the breeder describes the ratio as high THC with low CBD. Because the population has deliberately been kept diverse, aroma and effect can differ from plant to plant. How intense the effect is in an individual case depends on phenotype, dose and individual tolerance.
