Genetics & Origin of Pistachio
Pistachio comes from the Phenotype Mega Hunt that Humboldt Seed Company carried out in 2019: at the breeding facility in eastern Humboldt it was, according to the breeder, the strain with the heaviest resin coverage. P-61 and Fortune Cookies were crossed. The ratio is 65% Indica to 35% Sativa, the average THC content 24 to 28%; the breeder does not state a CBD value. In its growth, according to Humboldt Seed Company, Pistachio resembles the Cookies family but brings more trichomes and more yield. Added to this is low variation between the individual plants. The seeds are feminised and photoperiod, so flowering only begins with shorter light hours. From the previous year's selection comes California Cream, which the breeder lists as the winner of its Mega Hunt 2018.
Who Is Pistachio For?
Pistachio combines plenty of resin with stable, tall growth. It suits:
- Growers looking for particularly resinous flowers
- Outdoor gardeners who need a mould-resistant strain for the autumn
- Lovers of nutty, gassy aromas
- Growers with high-ceilinged rooms or a greenhouse with blackout
- Consumers who can handle 24 to 28% THC
The tall-growing strain is less suitable for low cabinets and small tents, and if you prefer mild strains, you should bear the high THC content in mind. You can find more strains for outdoors under outdoor strains.
Growing Pistachio: Indoor & Outdoor
Indoor Growing
Humboldt Seed Company gives the flowering time as 65 days, which is a good nine weeks. The indoor yield is given as up to 550 g/m². Expect tall, upright growth; the breeder does not state a height in centimetres. According to the breeder, the stems are strong and need less support than usual. Its advice for the transition to flowering: reduce the light hours gradually. Because of the height, you should keep the vegetative phase short or start training early. You will find the basics on this in the Growpedia.
Outdoor Growing
Outdoors, according to the breeder, harvest falls on 1 to 15 October. Pistachio is mould-resistant and is expressly recommended by the breeder for the autumn season outdoors, as well as for greenhouses with blackout (light dep). Up to 700 g per plant is stated. The plants grow tall, but the strong stems largely carry the flowers themselves. Give them a sunny spot with enough distance from neighbouring plants. Only grow where it is legal to do so.
Effect, Aroma & Flavour of Pistachio
Humboldt Seed Company describes the scent as impressively pungent: nutty and gassy, with an undertone of pistachio ice cream. As keywords the breeder names roasted nuts, gas and pistachio ice cream; a vanilla note is given in addition. The breeder does not name individual terpenes or a lab profile. It sums up the character of the strain in three keywords: high yield, gassy, frosty. The effect is described as invigorating and focusing in the head, with the body relaxed at the same time. With an average of 24 to 28% THC, Pistachio is among the very strong strains. So dose carefully – how intense the effect is depends on dose and personal tolerance.
