Genetics & Origin of Purpurea 09
Purpurea 09 is an inbred cross of the Purpurea Ticinensis genetics from the year 2009; Helvetic Seeds gives the genotype as Purpurea Ticinensis 09 × Purpurea Ticinensis 09. The breeder considers this vintage a potent, vigorous line that was not matched again later, and has therefore revived it: seeds from 2009 were sown in 2019, and the best male was crossed with the best females. The cross was deliberately made outdoors because, in the conviction of Helvetic Seeds, strains bred outside adapt better to the climate in question – the breeder accepts the risk of stray pollen in return. The old Swiss strain is Sativa-dominant with over 70% Sativa, photoperiod and regular, so it produces male and female plants. The manufacturer does not state a THC value. Courtesy F2 Regular is likewise regular and from Helvetic Seeds.
Who Is Purpurea 09 For?
Purpurea 09 is a robust open-ground strain with a history that needs a lot of room and tolerates cool weather. It suits:
- Outdoor gardeners in cooler, harsher or mountainous locations
- Growers with plenty of space for plants up to 4 metres tall
- Lovers of old Swiss genetics looking for a revived line
- Selectors who want to choose between two phenotypes and carry on breeding
- Gardeners who appreciate a red to purple autumn colouring
The tall-growing strain is less suitable for inconspicuous spots or low grow rooms. You can find more regular Sativas under regular Sativa strains.
Growing Purpurea 09: Indoor & Outdoor
Indoor Growing
Indoors, flowering takes 48 to 55 days, and the yield is given as 500 g/m²; as a photoperiod strain it only flowers after the switch to 12/12. The breeder does not state an indoor height. As the plants grow very tall outdoors and form strong, wide side shoots, it is worth sending them into flower early and keeping an eye on the height. Because the seeds are regular, you germinate more seeds than the number of plants you need and remove male plants in pre-flowering if pollination is not wanted. You will find the basics in the Growpedia.
Outdoor Growing
The strain shows its strength in open ground: according to the breeder, it has been grown outdoors in Switzerland for generations, is adapted to the mountainous climate and is therefore suitable for cooler, harsher climate zones. Both phenotypes can grow up to 4 metres tall; their growth is reminiscent of a Christmas tree, with wide side shoots at the bottom and a large main bud at the top. Phenotype 1 is ready for harvest at the end of September, Phenotype 2 needs around two weeks longer and is finished by mid-October at the latest; the distribution is around 50/50. Helvetic Seeds states a yield of up to 800 g per plant. Only grow where it is legal to do so.
Effect, Aroma & Flavour of Purpurea 09
Helvetic Seeds keeps it brief on the aroma: the compact flowers have a floral scent, and elsewhere in the strain description there is talk of sweet-earthy and fruity notes. The manufacturer does not give a lab terpene profile. The looks are more striking: leaves and flowers turn red to purple in autumn, and all the more strongly the colder the nights become. According to the breeder, Phenotype 2 carries more resin and has a slightly better ratio of flowers to leaves than Phenotype 1, which is more reminiscent of the original Purpurea. Helvetic Seeds gives no information on the effect and does not state a THC value either; the breeder merely speaks of potent genetics. We deliberately do not add any estimates here. How intense the effect is depends on phenotype, dose and individual tolerance.
