Genetics & Origin of Critical
At Royal Queen Seeds, Critical is one of the strains bred specifically for plenty of yield in a short time. The strain description lists it as an Indica-dominant hybrid from a classic Indica line; the exact cross and the ratio of Indica to Sativa are not stated there. The key figures are known: around 18% THC, low CBD content, compact, bushy growth with short internodes and dense, resinous flowers. The seeds are feminised and photoperiod, so flowering only begins after the light cycle is switched to 12/12. The strain description describes handling as easy, which makes the strain just as interesting for commercially minded growers as for beginners. If you want to work with male and female plants, you will find Critical Regular from the same breeder; Critical Kush also comes from Royal Queen Seeds.
Who Is Critical For?
Critical is designed for efficiency: short flowering, plenty of yield, little care. It suits:
- Beginners looking for an uncomplicated strain with low care requirements
- Growers who grow in SOG or ScrOG
- Gardeners with small rooms who need compact plants
- Yield-focused growers who want to harvest after 7 weeks of flowering
- Consumers looking for a physically relaxing effect at the end of the working day
It is less suitable if you are looking for a particularly intense aroma or a stimulating high for the daytime. You can find more fast, high-yielding strains under High Yield & Short Flowering.
Growing Critical: Indoor & Outdoor
Indoor Growing
Indoors, Critical flowers for just 7 weeks and grows 80 to 140 cm tall. The yield is given as 550 to 600 g/m². With short internodes and bushy growth, it quickly forms dense, resinous buds and is suitable for SOG as well as ScrOG; in SOG it is considered very efficient according to the strain description. The care requirements are low, which makes getting started easier. However, dense flowers and plenty of yield in little space call for good air movement, and you should support heavy shoots. The Growpedia explains the first steps under tips for beginners.
Outdoor Growing
Outdoors, Critical grows considerably larger: 180 to 220 cm is stated. In the northern hemisphere, harvest falls in late September to early October, and the yield is 600 to 650 g per plant. According to the strain description, a warm climate like that of the Mediterranean region is preferred. In cooler areas you therefore choose the sunniest, most sheltered spot and protect the dense flowers from persistent wet in autumn. You can find more strains for open ground under outdoor seeds. Only grow where it is legal to do so.
Effect, Aroma & Flavour of Critical
Critical smells earthy and sweet-spicy; the flavour is described as smooth with a sweet aftertaste. The terpene profile is considered mild and pleasant and is said to be suitable for extracts too. The manufacturer does not state a lab terpene profile. According to the strain description, the effect is physically relaxing and slightly sedating, with calm mental clarity – a balanced strain for the end of the working day or for periods of rest. The THC content is around 18%, the CBD content is low; a figure for it is missing. How intense the effect is in an individual case depends on dose and individual tolerance.
