Successful Seed Storage – How to Preserve Germination Power!

Proper seed storage is essential for maintaining germination ability over long periods of time. Several factors play a crucial role in protecting seeds from moisture, temperature fluctuations, light, and pests. Below you will learn what really matters when storing seeds and which containers are best suited for long-term preservation.

1. Dry Seeds – The Foundation for Long Shelf Life

The drier the seeds, the longer they remain viable. Moisture is the greatest enemy of seed storage. Seeds stored even slightly moist will begin to mold or rapidly lose their germination power. Therefore, seeds should be completely dry before storage. Ideally, the residual moisture should be below 8%. If unsure, let the seeds dry for a few days at room temperature in a dry location.

2. Store Airtight – Oxygen Reduces Longevity

Seeds “breathe” even in a dormant state. The more air (oxygen) present, the faster they age. To slow down the aging process, seeds should be stored as airtight as possible. Tight containers reduce air exchange and also prevent moisture from entering. Recommended containers include:

• Glass jars with clamp lids and rubber seals
• Screw-top jars (e.g., jam jars)
• Glass bottles with airtight caps

Multiple seed packets can be stored compactly in a larger jar. Plastic bags, paper bags or wooden boxes are not suitable as they do not provide a barrier against humidity.

3. Cool and Constant – Temperatures Between 0°C and 10°C

Temperature is a key factor for seed longevity. Optimal storage temperatures lie between 0°C and 10°C. Extreme heat, such as in attics, drastically reduces germination. Short-term temperature fluctuations, common in unheated rooms, are especially harmful. Constant, cool temperatures significantly extend seed lifespan.

4. Avoid Light – Store in Darkness

Light also accelerates seed aging. UV light in particular damages the delicate cell structures. Ideally, seeds should be stored in a dark room, cabinet, or opaque airtight container. Alternatively, containers can be placed inside dark boxes or fabric bags.

5. Avoid Moisture and Heat – Prevent Mold and Premature Germination

Moisture combined with warmth can break seed dormancy and promote mold or bacterial growth. Seed containers should therefore be kept in a dry environment — a cool basement is often more suitable than a damp garden shed. In areas with high humidity, adding silica gel packets or rice can help regulate moisture inside the jar.

6. Keep Pests Away – Mice and Insects

Seeds attract mice, moths, bean beetles, and other pests. To protect your seeds, use pest-proof containers. Glass jars with tightly sealed lids offer the best protection. Cardboard, paper bags, and wooden boxes do not provide adequate safety.

7. Deep-Freezing – For Maximum Longevity

For extremely long storage periods of 10 to over 20 years, seeds may be deep-frozen at -18°C. However, this requires very thorough drying beforehand. Residual moisture inside the seed can destroy the embryo during freezing. For deep-freezing, seeds should be vacuum-sealed or stored in metal-lined bags to prevent condensation.
