Guide to Germinating Cannabis Seeds

Germination is the crucial first step in growing cannabis, during which the seed awakens from dormancy and begins developing a root and its first leaves. The paper towel method is especially popular because of its simplicity, high success rate, and the ability to directly observe the emerging taproot.
Seed quality: Use only high-quality, mature cannabis seeds. These are usually dark brown to light brown, often with a tiger-like pattern. Pale or greenish seeds are often immature and may germinate poorly.
Water: Ideally, use distilled or reverse-osmosis water to avoid chlorine or other minerals that could interfere with the germination process. Alternatively, tap water can be boiled and allowed to cool.
Paper towels: Use unprinted, tear-resistant kitchen paper. The towels should be absorbent while still retaining their structure when moist.
Tweezers: Ideally, use tweezers that have been disinfected beforehand with a suitable disinfectant spray.
Layering: Take a clean plate and place two to four layers of paper towel on it. Moisten them carefully with water until they are fully saturated. Gently squeeze out excess water so the towels remain moist but not soaking wet. Too much water can effectively “drown” the seeds and restrict oxygen supply.
Placing the seeds: Position the cannabis seeds at least 2 cm apart on the lower paper towels. This helps reduce the risk of mold spreading and makes the seeds easier to remove later.
Covering: Cover the seeds with another two to four layers of moist paper towel. Make sure each seed is in direct contact with the paper.
Darkness and humidity: Place a second plate upside down over the first one or use a plastic container with a lid. This blocks light and helps maintain stable humidity.
Temperature: The ideal germination temperature is consistently between 23–25 °C. A warm location such as the top of a router or a heated propagation mat is suitable. Temperatures below 20 °C slow down germination, while temperatures above 28 °C may damage the seeds.
Daily checks: Check the setup once a day and carefully lift the upper plate.
Moisture management: The paper towel should remain consistently moist. If it begins to dry out, lightly spray it with lukewarm water. Make sure no standing water collects at the bottom of the plate.
Germination period: Most cannabis seeds germinate within 1–5 days. Some older or more resistant seeds may take up to 10 days.
Ready for transplanting: The seed is ready once the white taproot (radicle) is around 1–2 cm long. Do not wait too long, as the root may otherwise grow into the paper towel.
Handle with care: The taproot is extremely delicate. Use sterile tweezers or carefully hold the seed by its shell. Never touch the white root.
Planting: Place the germinated seed with the root pointing downward into a prepared growing medium (e.g. seedling soil or coco). The seed shell should sit around 0.5–1 cm below the surface of the medium. Lightly cover the hole and water carefully.
